Paraguay, a landlocked country in the heart of Latin America, is often referred to as South America’s hidden jewel. However, despite its rich cultural heritage and vibrant landscapes, Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in the region, confronting a range of significant challenges. Inequality is deeply entrenched, particularly in terms of gender, as ‘Machismo’ remains deeply rooted in society. Access to digital solutions and education is also limited, creating further barriers to progress for much of the population.

In the capital city of Asunción, these inequalities are starkly evident. While the city bustles with activity, the effects of rapid urbanization and economic disparity are visible, from the growing waste management issues to the digital divide that isolates rural communities from the benefits of technological advancement. Despite these challenges, the Paraguayan youth demonstrate a strong desire to drive positive change and address the issues that their communities face.

To harness this potential and tackle these pressing issues, the Penguin Academy and the German University partnered to bring Impact Week to Asunción. Held from July 5th to 13th, 2023, this event aimed to empower local youth by providing them with the tools and support needed to develop innovative solutions to the challenges facing Paraguay.

Impact Week Paraguay 2023 was a resounding success, bringing together 80 students, 8 international junior coaches, 23 local junior coaches, and 7 volunteers. Participants tackled 12 key problems across various tracks, including Life Cycle Assessment/Waste Management, Renewable Energy Transition, Gender Equality, Education, and the Digital Divide. The diversity of topics ensured that the solutions generated were not only innovative but also directly relevant to the specific needs of Paraguay.

We are especially grateful to our partners, coaches, and volunteers who made this event possible.

“Everyone was eager not only to learn the methodology but also to create something they could implement here”

Alexander Grots

Lead Coach

“In Paraguay, there’s still so much to be done. Methodologies like this inspire hope for change and help us realize that solutions are often closer than we think—and that we can actively be part of making that change happen.”
