Sometimes, all it takes is one moment. One space where someone finally says: “Your ideas matter.”
For James Mugambi, that moment happened in 2018, in a small room in Kibera, Nairobi. He didn’t know it then, but stepping into that Impact Week workshop would set off a chain of events that would transform not only his life but the health and dignity of his entire community.
Where Mindset Became Mission
James arrived with a single question: “How can I help my community live better?”
Through Design Thinking, he discovered that the answer didn’t come from the outside. He walked away from that week with a new conviction: “The transformation of Kibera begins with ourselves.”
A year later, James wasn’t just a participant; he returned as a Junior Coach. When young people from underserved communities shift from being “beneficiaries” to leaders, they become true agents of change.
Action in the Face of Crisis
When COVID-19 hit and waste began piling up in Kibera’s narrow streets, James didn’t wait for outside help. He did empower what leaders do: he acted.
Together with other innovators, he created KLINBERA, the first local waste management initiative. What started with a few bags became a movement:
- Employment: They hired 30 unemployed youth during lockdown.
- Service: 600 households gained access to weekly waste collection.
- Dignity: They turned trash-filled streets into safe spaces.
This is what happens when you put innovation tools in the hands of those who know the problems best.
From Local Project to Global Leadership
James’s story didn’t end in his neighborhood. Thanks to his continuous growth with Impact Week, he is now a global leader: serving as a jury member in Kenya, a coach in India, and an organizer in South Africa.
One “yes” in 2018 became a decade of leadership.
